10th International Conference on Urban Traffic Safety
The road to Vision Zero recently travelled through Edmonton, Alberta at the 10th International Conference on Urban Traffic Safety. For four days delegates listened, learned and interacted with traffic safety experts, researchers and practitioners from across the world.
Delegates heard from many great presenters on the programs and strategies that different countries, agencies, and jurisdictions have implemented to work towards achieving Vision Zero. Representing diverse professional backgrounds, the overriding theme of the conference was the need to share ideas and actions that will make communities safer.

The responsibility to promote traffic safety is shared by many disciplines and almost all the presentations to date have highlighted the significance of collaborating with partners and stakeholders.
Keynote speakers addressed issues ranging from enforcement initiatives used to reach Vision Zero, street racing and the impact on traffic safety, the use of data sources to understand bike grids, as well as lessons in the new cannabis laws in Canada. Overall the keynote speakers gave every delegate something to think about and consider for their jurisdiction as they work toward Vision Zero.
After three days of engaging presentations and many networking opportunities, the conference wrapped up with two very engaging and informative workshop sessions. Delegates were treated to discussions on creating Safe Systems in Urban Environments with a focus on Catering to Vulnerable Road Users and a session on the Legalization of Cannabis and its impacts on Traffic Safety, two extremely relevant and timely conversations.
Moving forward to Vision Zero, the City of Edmonton Traffic Safety Section will continue to seek out dialogue and engagement from all levels of government, law enforcement and first responders, the business and academic communities by hosting the 22nd International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety Conference August 18 – 21, 2019 and the 11th International Conference on Urban Traffic Safety August 21 – 23, 2019.
